  Poorhouses

After 1845, Parishes in Scotland could choose to set up workhouses or give out relief to the poor in the community. The establishments set up were usually called poor's houses or poorhouses  in Scotland. Where two or more Parishes combined with another to provide a poorhouse it was called a Combination Poorhouse. There were over 70 substantial Poorhouses established in Scotland, with an additional 90 smaller almshouses in operation.

Information on the various Poorhouses around the counties of Scotland , including some lists of their inmates as at the 1881 Census, can be found on Peter Higginbotham's informative website
